Ecological footprint

Ecological footprint: Actions to reduce it with environmental and social awareness

Our awareness of environmental issues has been expressed in practice for years through the careful management of our company’s operations. Today, more than ever, the need for an ecological consciousness is more and more pronounced and the contribution of all of us counts, regardless of origin. Our company has taken an active role for years, with important initiatives to strengthen and establish relevant practices in its services to reduce the ecological footprint.

What is the ecological footprint?

The ecological footprint essentially measures the effect that human consumption of natural resources has on the environment. In a few words, how human activity wastes the planet’s resources, pollutes the environment, creates waste while non-renewable resources (fossil fuels, metals) are depleting. The ecological footprint is an indicator used to understand the real impact of this overconsumption. This indicator helps us to know the regenerative capacity of the planet and the rate at which we consume the available resources.

Ecological Footprint: Nothing goes to “waste”

The smooth operation of InterCatering is not only about high service provision but also goes through the optimization of our operational and production processes. Our concern is the protection of the environment through a series of responsible steps in each classification. The recycling of materials is one of the primary but also the most essential actions to limit pollution. We recycle paper, plastic and glass of packaging that cannot be avoided, and participate in a special cooking oil recycling program. At the same time, we recycle our bio-waste in the brown bins, i.e. collecting organic materials, food residues, vegetables, fruits, for the purpose of composting, thus contributing to the natural transformation of the above into a useful soil-improving fertilizer.

Ecological Footprint: Acting wisely

Saving energy is a necessity that clearly affects the lives of all of us. In the corporate context it is our duty to take environmental variables into account and to adapt to the circumstances. That is why we make careful purchases of seasonal raw materials from local producers, thus reducing the energy needs related to their special packaging, transport and storage, while at the same time always having quality and fresh ingredients for the preparation of our dishes.

 Our “individual” responsibility

On an “internal” level, InterCatering makes sure to instill ecological values in its workforce. It is our concern to inform, train and raise awareness of our staff on the appropriate management and preparation of raw materials, so that they are utilized to the maximum extent possible. Our company’s Executive Chefs study the catering needs of each event and carefully plan the portioning while our Sales Executives recommend to customers the appropriate ratio of dishes in the event menus, to avoid food waste.

The lasting actions to reduce the ecological footprint

InterCatering is one of the founding members of the “Alliance for the Reduction of Food Waste” which was established in September 2020, advocating the reduction of food waste while also contributing to the awareness of a wider audience on this issue. At the same time, InterCatering in collaboration with the Non-Profit Organization “Boroume” provides high-quality dishes that have not been consumed, preserved with all food hygiene rules, to non-profit organizations for distribution to social groups in need.

The planet needs us all and every action counts.
